Digital Product Development

Todays products are developed mostly in a digital manner. That means that the virtual product is designed on the computer where all parts are described three dimensional. Thus this virtual product has a certain maturity stage before production has started. Technical problems like clashes between components, manufacturing issues, etc. can be reduced resp. avoided. Even the shop floor design or the development of jigs&tools can be optimized by using Digital Product Development technologies.

A main role in this way of working is PLM. Product Lifecycle Management fundamentally changes the way people, data and processes operate in the product development process.
PLM enables every employee, across every function, to collaborate virtually and in real time. It gives each in the product development process  involved party a permanent but controlled access to the data. Controlled means here that the different parties have different rights and view on the data, depending on their respective role. People are able to access data and interact with relevant information very early in the product evolution. This is a huge achievement because nearly 80% of the costs are spent during the development phase. The sooner any dicrepancies are identified, the lower is the effort to fix it.

As mentioned before, PLM is not only limited to internal parties of OEM, it is a technique that is used by the external enterprise as well, since todays products like aeroplanes, cars, ships, even consumer products like smartphones, TV's, etc. are developed, manufactured and assembled globally.

Using PLM means that the internal business methods&processes have to be described electronically. Tailored Systems is supporting their customers in applying that complex technique across the different facettes.
